“Who Are You, Great Mountain?”
When someone says to you, “Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill,” they’re saying you’re making a big deal out of something small. But there are times in life when we face true mountains. The doctor’s report is not good. A child is in trouble again. The addiction won’t stop. The big contract fell through. These obstacles look insurmountable and permanent, and the challenges seem too strong, too powerful. It’s easy to get discouraged, live worried, and believe it’s never going to change.
In the Scripture, that’s the way Zerubbabel felt. Having lived in exile in Babylon with his fellow Israelites, his dream was to rebuild the destroyed temple in Jerusalem. When the king of Persia allowed them to go back home, Zerubbabel got the people involved and they started building. But after they had laid the foundation, opposition came and accusations of a rebellion led to a government ruling that the construction cease. Sixteen long, discouraging years went by, and the temple sat in ruins. It looked permanent. Zerubbabel was facing an impossible situation and perhaps had given up. But listen to what God said to him through the prophet Zechariah: “Who are you, great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain, a mere molehill…and he will finish building this temple” (Zechariah 4:7, 9). That promise breathed new life into Zerubbabel’s faith. He called his men together and started working. Four years later, they finished building the temple.
You may be facing a mountain today, in your health, your finances, your dreams. It seems like you’re stuck. But God is in the business of turning mountains into molehills. He can flatten what looks impossible in your life. Those things that are blocking your health, keeping you from your dreams, or stopping your children may look permanent, like a mountain, but it’s not too much for our God. He knows how to so level the ground that used to stop you to the point where you walk over it. What you thought was permanent is no longer there.
Now here’s a key: Don’t be intimidated by the mountain. Don’t believe the lies that it’s never going to change. No, God is at work in your life right now. There’s no mountain He can’t bring down. One touch of His favor, and the high thing becomes low. Don’t talk to God about how big your mountain is, talk to your mountain about how big our God is. Stir up your faith and say, “Mountain, you cannot stay in my life. You cannot stop my purpose. You may look insurmountable, but my God is a mountain mover. My God is going to turn you into a plain. When it’s all said and done, I will walk over you.” What looks impossible will turn around. You can’t explain it. It doesn’t make sense. That’s God turning mountains into molehills, flattening out what’s blocking your destiny.
